A magazine, a media group, an international Art fair

The Frieze was founded in 1991 by Amanda Sharp, Matthew Slotover and Tom Gidley. Originally, it aimed at being a magazine which focused on Contemporary Art and culture. It wasn’t until 2003 that the group launched the Frieze Art fair in London. Today, Frieze has three publications: Frieze Magazine, Frieze Masters Magazine and Frieze Week and four international Art fairs in three Art capital cities: London, Los Angeles and New York. The most recent creation of the gigantic group is the launching of the Contemporary Art fair in Los Angeles planned to open in 2019. It should take place in Paramount Pictures‘ studios. The 2018 edition of the New York Art fair takes place from May 2nd to May 6th 2018 and puts together the most significant names in the Fine Arts market: Gagosian, Perrotin, David Zwirner among others.

The presence of Scarlett Johansson but the absence of Leonardo Di Caprio

The New York Frieze is used to have its VIP guests during the preview. Indeed, major personalities from the Art world attend it every year. It is the case for Max Hollein, the new Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year there also was Maria Balshaw, new Director of the Tate Museum of London. On top of the Art elite, other personalities from culture were mixed. It was the case for movie star Scarlett Johanssonet and actor John Krasinski. However, Leonardo Di Caprio who used to attend the Art fair wasn’t seen among the guests this year. In fact, in 2017, an army of fans disguised in characters embodied by the actor on the occasion of his movies invaded the Art fair. Maybe this was a bad memory. The presence of so many personalities confirms the dominating place of the Frieze among the most prestigious Art fairs in the world.

The Frieze’s Artists in all their states

Like the years before the 2018 edition of the Frieze runs alongside with a series of talks and events related o Art. Among the significant initiatives this year there is “For your Infortainment” organized by Matthew Higgs, Director of the nonprofit White Columns. The idea is to have 8 booths exhibiting the greatest Artists represented by Hudson and Feature Inc. It is a tribute to the Art dealer Hudson who passed away in 2014 leaving a huge artistic legacy behind him. Among the presented Artists there is Takashi Murakami. One of his Artworks is currently shown as part of the exhibition Artists and Robots at the Grand Palais in Paris. Such a tribute is even more surprising when considering the fact that Hudson did not start attending Art fairs until late in his life. On the emerging Artists end, Kapwani Kiwanga was awarded with the Frieze Artist Award with the support of the Luma Foundation. Based in Paris, the Artist made an open air installation which aims at exploring the relation between freedom of movement and architectural exclusions. She was selected among hundreds of candidacies coming from close to 50 countries.
