Created in 2006 by the LVMH group and designed by architect Franck Gehry, the Louis Vuitton Foundation will be hosting a selection of timely and prominent works from the MoMA this fall. Entitled “Being Modern : The MoMA in Paris“, the highly anticipated exhibition will start on October 11th, 2017 and close on March 5th, 2018.

A sharp selection of 200 works

Paintings, sculptures, photographs, design objects, films, drawings… a total of 200 multidisciplinary works from the MoMA’s six departments will be loaned to the Foundation. Visitors will be able to discover some of the most prominent art pieces of Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse, René Magritte and Franck Stella, to mention just a few. Some of the masterpieces exhibited have never been presented in France. These include Campbell’s Soup Cans by Andy Warhol (1962) and The Bird in Space by Constantin Brancusi (1928). In addition to the famous works, an archive of the MoMA retracing the history of the Museum and to put the works of the artists into context will also be displayed.

As an “ode to modernity”, the exhibition includes works from the birth of modern art to the contemporary era, including abstract art, minimalism or pop art, all acquired since the inception of the museum in 1929.

An ambitious project

Currently in full expansion and renovation of its New York building, it is no coincidence that the MoMA associates with the Louis Vuitton Foundation and lends to it part of its collection.

The Parisian exhibition really fulfils the two wishes of the two establishments : to present to the French audience a part of its collection and to prefigure the more fluid and interdisciplinary hang-up of MoMA that visitors will discover when the work will be finished, notably through a well-thought and innovative museum program.
